The Acupressure in First Aid Federation, Hong Kong

Certificate in AFA

Acupressure in First Aid based on ancient principles of acupressure, but using finger pressure and rubbing or massage instead. Initial treatment combines finger pressure and rubbing to produce heat which minimizes pain. This is followed by the application of pressure, to varying degrees and at particular locations, to effect the required relief.

Trunk Region

SHENSHU
(KIDNEY POINT)

Location :  On the back, at the level of the umbilicus (navel). More technically, this point lies 1.5 inches to the side of the lower end of the spinal column of the second lumbar vertebra, in the muscles

Indications :  Hypothermia (low body temperature); general weakness; kidney problems

Manipulation :  Use 'Pushing', 'Pressing' or 'Rubbing' method (This point is subcutaneous 0.8 - 1 inch). In cases of general weakness, apply heat.

SHUANGWAN
(TWO CAVITIES)

SHUANGWAN consists of two acupuncture points: ZHONGWAN (MIDDLE CAVITY) and SHANGWAN (UPPER CAVITY).

Location :
ZHONGWAN (MIDDLE CAVITY) : On the midline of the abdomen, 4 inches directly above the umbilicus (Belly Button).

SHANGWAN (UPPER CAVITY): On the midline of the abdomen, 5 inches directly above the umbilicus

Indications :  Vomiting, stomach-ache, abdominal distension, gastritis, diarrhea, stomach spasm, motion sickness

Function :  Stimulating either or both points helps normalize gastric secretions and contractions, hence calming the stomach

Manipulation :  Use 'Pressing’, ‘Rubbing’ or ‘Pushing’ methods gently
(This point is subcutaneous 1- 1.5 inches).

NB:  When treating motion sickness, use “rubbing” method because direct pressure may induce vomiting.

DANTIAN
(DANTIAN)

DANTIAN consists of two acupuncture points: QIHAI (SEA OF QI) and GUANYUAN (HINGE AT THE SOURCE).

Location :  QIHAI (SEA OF QI): On the midline of the abdomen, 1.5 inches below the umbilicus
GUANYUAN (HINGE AT THE SOURCE): On the midline of the abdomen, 3 inches below the umbilicus

Indications :  Problems of the lower abdomen (e.g. pain, distension, diarrhea); gynaecological problems; general weakness

Manipulation :  Use 'Pushing', 'Pressing' or 'Rubbing' method (This point
  is subcutaneous 1.5 - 2 inches)

NB :  If nausea occurs, use “rubbing” method, otherwise it may cause vomiting.

These points may also be used on a regular basis to maintain and strengthen health. For this purpose, rub the points 3-5 minutes daily.
